Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has landed himself in hot water over a leaked picture of an alcohol bottle posted privately on his Instagram story.
The Marani red wine bottle was specially packaged for the 27th General Annual Conference for International Association of Prosecutors which Shameem is currently attending. He posted the picture on his private Instagram story captioned “welcome to Georgia” to his 300 or so followers.
Following the picture, prominent local political figures have taken to social media to call for Shameem’s resignation. These include MP of Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Toriq and Sheikh Ali Zaid.
Local media have reported that Shameem commented on the matter, stating that the bottle was gifted to him during the conference and that he wished to keep the subject private.
The consumption of alcohol is forbidden under Sharia Law, which is practiced in the Maldives and could lead to jail sentences.
