President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem would be representing the government in the trial against the suspects arrested over the terror attack against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
President Solih revealed that a special team has been ensembled for the trial against the suspected terrorists who attempted to assassinate Speaker Nasheed. Moreover, a thorough investigation will be carried out into the terror plot and everyone involved would be brought to justice.
President Solih ordered an intelligence audit and security assessment of both Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), as he believes that security and intelligence procedures needed to be revised to prevent such attacks from happening again. Further, he has ordered a detailed report of security measures taken to all those who are being provided security from the government and that the audit on Speaker Nasheed’s security will be received soon.
The Commissioner of Police Hameed admitted that there was room for improvement within the government to share information and an ‘autopsy’ into why police had not received intelligence regarding such a plot.
The explosion which went off around 20:20 on Thursday night left Speaker Mohamed Nasheed injured while he was getting into his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City along with five more people have also been reported to be injured from the explosion. Maldives Police Service and MNDF has come under public scrutiny after stating that they had not received any prior intelligence reports on the plot.
Three suspects have been arrested over the attack so far including the one who allegedly triggered the bomb, Adhuham earlier today. They have all denied the charges against them.
