Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has announced that charges for the May 6 terror attack on former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed will be filed on August 5.
Shameem stated at a news conference that the attack is being investigated at a satisfactory pace and that charges may be filed in court by 5 August 2021, as stipulated by the Terrorism Act.
PG Shameem anticipates that the full investigative reports will be submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) by the end of July. He also stated that a prosecutor has been appointed to the case and is collaborating closely with the Maldives Police Service.
He stated that the investigation is looking for not just the perpetrators of the attack, but also the accomplices and financiers.
The Maldives Police Service is presently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack on Speaker Nasheed. So far, four people have been arrested, all of whom appear to be radicalized. The Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services is looking into Speaker Nasheed’s security breach, which led to the May bomb blast.
