Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mohamed Muizzu on his victory in the Maldives presidential election. Muizzu, PPM/PNC candidate, secured 54% of the votes, while outgoing President Mohamed Solih – MDP, conceded defeat with 46% of the votes.
PM Modi expressed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with the Maldives and enhancing cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
Muizzu’s campaign focused on reducing Indian military presence.
Muizzu had the backing of former President Abdulla Yameen. Yameen was disqualified from the election due to corruption and money laundering convictions.
Supporters of both Yameen and Muizzu celebrated outside the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) office last night.
Solih acknowledged the results and thanked voters for their democratic participation.
The election saw high voter turnout across 586 polling stations, including those in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Britain, and Abu Dhabi.
