Police apprehended a foreign national on Saturday after searching a private residence in Dhangethi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, in connection with a probe into the brutal murder of a local businessman.
Mahmood Aboobakr, 57, was discovered tied up and dumped in an abandoned well in Dhangethi on Thursday, following an island-wide search hours after he was reported missing.
An island resident told local media on Saturday morning that police were examining the home of an elderly resident in connection with the murder. According to accounts, the elderly resident lives alone in the home with a foreign caregiver.
Police searched the property, which is around 100 meters from where Mahmood’s body was discovered, after getting multiple reports of a strange noise emanating from the house on the night the victim went missing.
A police media official confirmed that a male migrant worker had been arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder investigation, but no other details were provided.
Mahmood was last seen leaving his house at 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday. He was reported missing at 10:00 a.m. the next day, prompting island residents to join together to find him. At around 3:15 p.m., his corpse was discovered tied and put inside a bag in a water well at an abandoned property.
