The Maldives Police Service has confirmed the arrest of the key suspect in the assassination attempt on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz said that while other videos of the incident and the suspect arrested today have been released, the police have withheld the footage in order to protect the witnesses who are also visible in the footage.
The names of the other two people detained in connection with the terror attack were released by the Maldives Police Service yesterday. They are Mujaaz Ahmed, Ma. Feyruge, Malé and Thahumeen Ahmed, Folheyma, GA. Kondey.
Thahumeen Ahmed, according to police, is the owner of the motorcycle used in the blast, and the number plate on it had been modified. Police also stated that the suspects tried to scratch the motorcycle’s engine number.
Riyaz also stated that Mujaaz, who was arrested yesterday, was apprehended after a search of his home. He went on to say that police suspect him of being involved in the case, but the degree of his involvement is difficult to determine since the investigation is still underway.
According to Riyaz, the suspects arrested yesterday have a criminal record, but he did not specify what crimes they committed.
The public and the media were both praised by police for their help in the investigation.
