The United States Capitol came under attack on Friday, killing one officer and injuring another which forced the Capitol complex to lock down.
A motorist rammed a car into a security barrier before the attacker lunged towards the officer with a knife, police said. The officers responded by opening fire and the attacker was shot dead. However, the authorities said the attack did not appear to be terrorism related.
This attack comes three months after the US Capitol riot in January.
Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said it was “with a very, very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries.”
The officer was later identified as William Evans who has been a US Capitol Police officer for 18 years.
