Maldives Police Service announced that they will be conducting random inspections on individuals wearing helmets in non-mandatory areas.
This follows a recent trend of people wearing helmets to conceal their identity while committing crimes. The police began their operations on Sunday, and have already encountered incidents involving helmet-wearing suspects; two individuals wearing helmets vandalized a juice bar in Hulhumale on Thursday, while another two stabbed a man inside a shop in Male’ City on Friday.
Regulations dictate that helmets are compulsory for drivers and passengers in the backseat of A1 and A0 vehicles when the speed limit exceeds 30 kilometers per hour. Exceptions to this rule include the Sinamale’ Bridge and highways.
