President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has conveyed his congratulations to the newly elected president, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a recent tweet.
He also expressed his appreciation for the public’s exemplary commitment to democracy throughout the electoral process. President Solih extended his gratitude to the members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Alliance for Progressive Coalition (AP) for their support during his campaign and also thanked all the citizens who cast their votes in his favor.
Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate representing the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition, emerged victorious in the runoff round of the presidential election. With results announced from nearly all of the 586 ballot boxes, Dr. Muizzu secured a resounding victory with a substantial lead of over 18,000 votes. His total vote count reached 126,160, while the incumbent president received 107,444 votes.
President Solih’s support was primarily concentrated in just two regions, Alifu Alifu Atoll and Addu City, as he fell short of securing a broader mandate.
In the initial round of voting, featuring eight candidates, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu garnered 46 percent of the vote, narrowly missing the 50 percent threshold needed for an outright election win. President Solih received 39 percent of the votes during this round.
