President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated the new powerhouse in Veyvah, Meemu Atoll.
The 29-year-old powerhouse being used on the island has now been shut down. The old powerhouse was built with inadequate space for upgrades and was being operated in a leased building. The new powerhouse has an area of 22,000sqft, which is a significant improvement compared to the 1,700sqft in the old powerhouse.
Fenaka Corporation Limited has also upgraded the island’s cable network to provide services using the new 400kw powerhouse, which was developed at a cost of MVR 10 million. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Managing Director of Fenaka Ahmed Saeed Mohamed said that there were 67 powerhouses that have become a problem for local communities when the administration took office. He said that in the past few years these powerhouses have been moved and developed away from residential areas. He added that Fenaka has completed five of the eight projects awarded by the administration.
Veyvah has a population of 300 residents. The new powerhouse has solved the island’s longstanding problem of power outages.
