President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during his address following the commencement of the land reclamation project at the Hankede-Maradhoo intersection in Addu, emphasized the historical significance and transformative potential of this endeavor. The president arrived in Addu for a three-day visit on Saturday afternoon, underscoring the government’s commitment to the development of Addu as a key priority.
A substantial investment of MVR1.5 billion has been allocated to the reclamation project, which aims to expand the land area of Addu by 190 hectares. Additionally, MVR179 million is planned for the extension of 42 hectares of land to Hulhumeedhoo Island.
President Solih highlighted the government’s initiatives to enhance tourism in Addu, emphasizing the synchronized progress of the land reclamation, road construction, and integrated tourism projects in Hankede. Spearheaded by the Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC), the comprehensive development plan for Hankede encompasses diverse tourism facilities, including integrated resorts, hotels, and guesthouses, catering to various markets and sectors.
The president emphasized that the project is currently in its initial stages and is expected to be completed within two years. Upon completion of the Hankede project and other associated developments, Addu will have the capacity to accommodate 7,000 tourist beds, thereby opening up increased tourism opportunities in the region.
President Solih reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to executing development projects in line with the aspirations of the people. He emphasized the significance of the 67-kilometer road construction initiative in Addu, highlighting the decision to use asphalt instead of concrete, aligning with the revised plan.
The government expressed deep commitment to the comprehensive development of Addu City, recognizing its potential to become the primary economic hub in the region. Through a range of transformative projects, the government aims to create a vibrant and prosperous city that offers numerous socioeconomic opportunities for its residents, fostering growth and driving sustainable development in the region.
