President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has directed Defense Minister Mariya Didi to make changes to the command structure of the Maldives National Defence Force’s Special Protection Group (SPG), which oversees securing the safety of visiting dignitaries and high-ranking government officials.
The President’s Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez tweeted that the President has announced changes to the Special Protection Group in order to improve its services even further. However, no further information was offered.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) had made several changes to the command structure of the Special Protection Group (SPG) on Saturday, naming Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Muizzu as Commanding Officer and Major Moosa Rameez as Deputy Commanding Officer.
Colonel Nasrullah Ibrahim, the previous Commander of SPG, was assigned as the commanding officer of Aviation Security.
The parliament is presently looking into Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s security breach, which resulted in the May 6 terror attack.
