President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the sixth amendment to the Maldives’ Judges Act and the first amendment to the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act on Wednesday.
The changes to the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act introduced today assign an official residence for the Speaker of the People’s Majlis and their family. The statute also specifies many enhancements to the Speaker’s and their family’s security and safety, including protection and security from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
Furthermore, the Judges Act amendments adopted designate an official residence for the Chief Justice and their family. The amendment also includes directions to strengthen the Chief Justice’s safety and security, such as personal security from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
The revisions to both laws were approved by the People’s Majlis on June 21 during the 14th sitting of the parliament’s second session this year. The modification has now been published in the Government Gazette following ratification.
