President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih signed the Maldives Higher Education Bill into law today, establishing the legislative structure for the provision and development of higher education and training in the Maldives.
The act establishes the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA), an autonomous body tasked with ensuring the standard of post-secondary certificates awarded as evidence of educational accomplishments.
All of the Maldives Qualification Authority’s property, assets, employees, budget, responsibilities, legal obligations, and workers will be transferred to the new body under the legislation.
The law also lays out the procedures for registering and operating higher education institutions, as well as their conditions, with the aim of establishing a higher education system that offers equal opportunities to all Maldivians while also ensuring the sustainability of educational services.
Further, all matters relating to the new MQA will be the responsibility of the Minister of Higher Education.
The Maldives Higher Education Bill was passed by Parliament on April 28th.
