Public schools will not distribute free meals to pupils when the new academic year begins following the disastrous period of the COVID-19, according to the education ministry.
The free meal program for students was one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s campaign pledges, which began in 2019 with 25 schools and was later expanded to all public schools by the start of the second semester of the 2019 academic year.
However, due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in June of last year, the education ministry informed all public schools that the program would be temporarily discontinued and encouraged parents to provide meals before sending their children to school.
With the start of the school year slated for August 10, the education ministry told all public schools in a memo that the free meal program would be discontinued until the end of the year due to some complications.
Despite the fact that the program has been suspended until the end of 2021, the education legislation established by the People’s Majlis last year states that the government must provide free meals to pupils to promote a healthy lifestyle.
