In a joint statement today, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) – the ruling coalition – voiced deep concerns over the recent attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem. The coalition has called for an expedited investigation, urging the State to deploy all available resources to identify and bring the assailants to justice.
Emphasizing their commitment to cooperation with the government, the parties urged leaders to prioritize the security of high-ranking officials and citizens alike. The attack occurred early this morning as Shameem, returning from his morning run, was targeted by two helmet-clad assailants on a motorcycle near Noor Mosque.
Though Shameem managed to defend himself from a hammer-wielding attack, sustaining injuries to his left forearm, the incident has sparked heightened security concerns. Police are currently investigating the matter, with the coalition labeling such assaults as violent, terrorist acts aimed at disrupting the peace and obstructing crucial state responsibilities.
The PPM/PNC statement also referenced media reports suggesting premeditation, underscoring the importance of a thorough investigation to unveil the truth behind the attack. As the nation awaits updates, the call for swift justice echoes concerns for the safety of key state figures and the overall stability of the Maldives.
