A safari boat capsized near Kaafu Thilafushi on Sunday, killing one passenger, authorities have reported.
Handy Cruiser, a safari boat, went down around four nautical miles south-west of Thilafushi on Sunday morning.
According to officials, seven people were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male City following the horrific incident, and one of them was declared dead.
The deceased was identified as a 41-year-old male foreigner by authorities; the victim’s nationality has yet to be revealed through official channels.
IGMH stated that the six remaining patients are being treated but refuses to provide any more information due to patient confidentiality.
Handy Cruiser, which had 17 passengers on board, was on its way to Male’ City when it began to sink near Bolifushi.
The incident was reported at 08:39 a.m., according to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), and the MNDF Male’ Area Coastguard Squadron was deployed to react.
According to the MNDF, the boat began to take in water and sank as a result of heavy rain and rough seas.
The event occurred while an orange notice was in effect throughout a vast portion of the Maldives, warning of high winds and dangerous seas. MNDF released a statement earlier this Sunday asking travelers to exercise caution, citing several instances of mishaps at sea as a result of the poor weather.
