The Ministry of Education has informed school employees to get vaccinated before the start of the new academic year on August 10.
The education ministry stated in a letter to schools that all employees must acquire the required dose of the COVID-19 vaccination before schools can resume normal operations. The ministry also indicated that discussions are ongoing to make it easier for school staff to receive vaccine doses in both the Greater Male’ area and on residential islands.
All school employees are required to receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before the start of the academic year, and if the employee has any reason for not receiving the vaccine, the individual must submit a letter from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) identifying the reason to the school.
With school staff obliged to be vaccinated by August 10, the HPA had previously stated that COVID-19 transmission among children is expected to increase, as COVID-19 vaccines are not administered to children under the age of 18.
According to HPA data, 260,991 people from the eligible population received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination, whereas 321,350 received the first dose.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Monday that the government intends to conduct a mass vaccination campaign next month with the goal of vaccinating 90% of the eligible population by the end of August.
