Several Members of the Parliament (MPs) have signed a petition to remove Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla from their designations.
It has been reported in local media that the efforts are being undertaken by members of Nasheed and Eva’s party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and so far 10 members have signed in support of Nasheed and Eva’s removal from Speaker and Deputy Speaker designations, respectively. However, the petition has stalled a bit due to some members being unable to sign the petition as they are out of Male’ during the current Parliament recess.
MDP’s President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s faction is confident that a majority of MPs are expected to sign the petition once they are back, and the ultimate aim is to submit a motion to remove both Nasheed and Eva from their designations as soon as the Parliament restarts, according to inside sources.
This comes after Nasheed defended the allegations against his brother Nazim Abdul Sattar who is accused of homosexual relations with a Bangladeshi expatriate named MD Alamgir. Moreover, Nasheed responded by accusing President Solih of trying to appease hardline extremists and threatened to release pictures of an alleged affair of President Solih with an unnamed girl.
According to the constitution of the Maldives, a minimum of 43 votes is required to pass a motion to remove the Speaker of the Parliament.
