Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture has said it has received information that shark meat and fins are being processed and traded on black market in the Maldives.
The ministry said actions are being taken to stop the export of shark meat and fins from the country such as extensively checking export contains. Moreover, Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) have been carrying out patrol of areas suspected of illegal shark fishing.
Furthermore, Fisheries Ministry said Maldives Customs Service had stopped a shipment of shark fins from being exported in January, and it also said MPS seized a shark fishing vessel near Alifu Dhaalu Atoll a few days ago.
Shark fishing along with processing and exporting of shark meat and fins have been illegal in Maldives since 2010.
