The Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) has strengthened the rules for selling mobile Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards.
CAM announced the change in the sale of SIM cards for mobile phone services over the increase in crimes committed using communication devices. The SIM cards will remain in non-activated status or unused when sold from December 1. The SIM cards will be activated only after the service provider receives the full details of the customer. Further details on the new rules for issuing SIM cards will be available from the service provider. CAM stated more changes will be made in the coming days.
Maldives Police Service stated there has been an increase in phone scams with over 220 complaints filed so far this year. MPS has warned of various scams to steal money from victims and urged the public not to give out personal details to individuals who contact them and claim to be from banks or other authorities.
