Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has applauded the thoughtful actions taken by the Government of Maldives to aide former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flee Sri Lanka.
In a tweet sent out by Speaker Nasheed shortly after Gotabaya handed in his resignation as President of Sri Lanka, Nasheed said he believes Gotabaya would not have resigned if he were still in Sri Lanka, fearful of losing his life. Nasheed further commended the thoughtful actions of the Government of Maldives and offered best wishes to the people of Sri Lanka.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation will be officially announced after the constitutionally mandated process is completed. Faced with a popular revolt, Rajapaksa had vowed to step down by Wednesday (July 13) itself, but had not done so.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives earlier this week and on Thursday took a Saudi Airlines plane to Singapore. His escape to Maldives was negotiated by former President and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, sources said.
