Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Wednesday that Parliament needs an overhaul to have parliamentarians who represent the entire Maldives, instead of individual geographic constituencies.
Nasheed said that he believes it important to set a limit for parliamentary seats as the current system is leading to a shortage of parliamentarians who can advocate on behalf of the entire Maldivian population
Moreover, it would be best to have a national list of parliamentarians who are elected from a party list rather than a constituency and the current system is ineffective, according to Nasheed.
He made these comments in a letter he released via his social media on Wednesday evening.
