Former President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has filed a case with Civil Court of Maldives against Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef over a defamatory tweet accusing Nasheed conspired to murder 50 people.
In a statement, President Nasheed’s legal team said the suit was filed in the Civil Court today seeking compensation for the damage caused by Shareef’s defamatory tweets against Nasheed. They have asked Shareef to pay MVR 10 million as compensation for the damage Nasheed suffered and denied all the accusations.
Shareef tweeted that Nasheed conspired to kill fifty people to overthrow former President Maumoon’s government and blame their deaths on President Maumoon. Shareef also claimed that the plan was to bring mercenaries as journalists and kill 50 people during a massive MDP demonstration. However, then MDP parliamentary group passed a resolution to stop the atrocity, according to Shareef.
