Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of Parliament and former President, has joined the newly minted political powerhouse, The Democrats.
In a ceremony held at Artificial Beach, Nasheed signed up as a member of the party. Parliamentarian Ahmed Rasheed also joined The Democrats during the event, bringing the total number of party members in Parliament to 15.
Earlier this year, supporters of Nasheed parted ways with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and applied to form The Democrats. The Elections Commission of the Maldives approved the party’s formation, and on July 12, it was officially registered. Founder Hassan Latheef received the party registry from the Elections Commission.
The Democrats expressed their determination to expand their membership and eventually field a presidential candidate for the upcoming election.
