Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has begun his campaign for the primary election of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaker Nasheed held the inaugural campaign event at Sultan Park on December 28. At the event, he spoke on his reasons for contesting in the primary election and his pledges for the presidential run.
Nasheed also severely criticised the policies of the current administration. He also claimed that MDP will get fewer votes if President Solih contested in the upcoming Presidential Election. Additionally, Nasheed argued that President Solih won the last presidential election by forming a coalition. Therefore, it is not a political victory for President Solih, he claimed.
Speaker Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are the only candidates contesting in the MDP primary election, to be held on January 28. President Solih has also begun his campaign and his team has opened campaign sites and begun travelling to the atolls as part of the campaign activities.
