Former President and People’s Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has left on an official trip to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaker Nasheed will be accompanied by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Environment Minister Aminath Shauna, and Climate Change Envoy Sabra Ibrahim Noordeen at the UN climate summit, which will be held by the United Kingdom and Italy next week.
The COP26 conference, which will be attended by world leaders, government officials, and negotiators from over 100 nations, is set to begin next Sunday and conclude on November 12.
Furthermore, Nasheed is expected to remain in Europe beyond the meeting, having returned to the Maldives on October 13 after a four-month treatment in Germany and the United Kingdom for injuries sustained in the May 6 blast.
COP26 is projected to be the largest gathering since the Paris Agreement in 2015, bringing together parties to accelerate action toward the Paris Agreement’s and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s goals.
