Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is set to officially join The Democrats during the party’s inaugural rally scheduled for Wednesday, according to various sources. The Elections Commission granted permission on Sunday for the registration of The Democrats, which is led by Nasheed’s associates.
Reliable sources have revealed that Nasheed will make his formal entry into The Democrats at the party’s founding rally, which will take place at the Ghiyasuddin School hall at 8:30 pm on Wednesday. Nasheed himself confirmed his attendance at the event through a post on Twitter.
The formation of The Democrats began in May when a group of lawmakers supporting Nasheed departed from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and initiated the process of establishing the new party. It is worth noting that despite the formation of The Democrats, Nasheed remained a member of the MDP and served as the party’s president until June 21.
Nasheed, who currently faces a no-confidence motion in parliament from the MDP, has openly expressed his support for the formation of The Democrats. This move signifies a significant development in the political landscape, as Nasheed aligns himself with the newly formed party while maintaining his role as Parliament Speaker.
The founding rally of The Democrats is anticipated to be a pivotal event that will shape the future trajectory of the political landscape in the Maldives. The party’s formation has garnered attention and is poised to have an impact on the ongoing political dynamics, with Nasheed’s presence adding further weight to its significance.
