Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed has decided to withdraw his motion to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s congress to hold a public referendum on change in the governance system to a parliamentary system.
Speaker Nasheed announced the decision after discussions with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during MDP’s congress today.
According to Nasheed, the decision was made after two to three days of discussions with President Solih leading up to MDP’s congress. Nasheed said the President is willing to discuss the change in governance system further and at this time, there is no need to proceed with the motion.
A motion to MDP’s congress to hold a public referendum vote to change the system of governance in the Maldives was lodged by Speaker Nasheed. However, many including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have stated that Maldives does not need a change at this time. Many are now speculating whether Nasheed has finally admitted defeat in his pursuit of a parliamentary system.
