President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has named Abbas Faiz as a special envoy to oversee the investigation into the May 6 Terror Attack that seriously injured Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
Abbas Faiz, a British citizen, has been tracking the human rights situation in South Asia, including Maldives, for over 30 years. He previously served at Amnesty International as the Secretary-General’s senior advisor on the countries under his purview, and he has spent the last three years as a Lecturer in Law at Essex University in the United Kingdom.
According to the announcement by the President’s Office, the special envoy will be tasked with ensuring that all phases of the inquiry, indictment, and trial of the suspects, as well as any applicable and necessary inquiries, comply with international best practices and national laws in order to ensure the process’s integrity. Moreover, the special envoy will oversee the ongoing investigation under the guidelines set by the Prosecutor General.
A remote-controlled IED was strapped to a motorcycle parked near Speaker Nasheed’s residence on May 6, and it exploded just as Nasheed reached his car. After a series of extensive surgeries at ADK Hospital, he is now undergoing additional care in Germany.
