Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has extended the Maldives’ State of Public Health Emergency by one month.
On March 12, 2020, then-Health Minister Abdulla Ameen declared a public health emergency for 30 days, exercising the minister’s discretionary powers under the Public Health Act. The public health emergency has been extended 18 times since then.
The health ministry declared on Wednesday that the public health emergency will be maintained since COVID-19 is still a threat to the Maldives, and that any special procedures that the circumstance necessitates shall be implemented.
The Maldives has registered 152 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases in the country to 1.730. The country has also continued vaccination efforts, with 383,620 people receiving the first dosage and 302,182 being fully vaccinated.
