State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has launched its rooftop solar project ‘Avikatha’.
Vice President Faisal Naseem inaugurated the project at the function held to mark the 25th anniversary of STELCO. Under the project, STELCO will be renting the roof of houses to install solar panels to allow households to generate revenue.
Individuals interested in installing solar panels need to have permission from the homeowner. Additionally, the building needs to have a rooftop that spans 100sqft and is exposed to sunlight, with the capacity to sustain 150kg in weight. STELCO stated that applications will be open in July and that agreements will be signed with applicants that meet the criteria after conducting a survey on the location. The company will install the solar panels and deposit the monthly lease payment to the applicant’s bank account. Chosen applicants will also be exempt from handling the renovation and maintenance work.
STELCO has been working to increase renewable energy production in the country since 2020 as part of the efforts of the Maldives to become carbon-neutral by 2030.
