According to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), households in the Greater Male’ Region should expect higher electricity bills in April due to the ongoing hot weather. STELCO has reported that electricity consumption during the months of February to June typically sees an increase due to the high temperatures in the Maldives. Additionally, the company has received complaints from customers regarding their high electricity bills during this period.
Approximately 75% of households in the Greater Male’ Region are expected to see an increase in their electricity bill, with the average amount expected to rise by around MVR 500. The state-owned company has revealed that electricity consumption has reached an all-time high due to the extreme heat, prompting the formation of a special team to ensure that the provision of electricity is uninterrupted.
STELCO has urged customers to be mindful of their energy consumption and to adopt energy-efficient practices during this period. With the hot weather expected to persist for several more weeks, customers are advised to take measures such as using energy-saving light bulbs and switching off electrical appliances when not in use, to help reduce their electricity bills.
