A migrant worker has been remanded in jail for 15 days in connection with the murder of a local businessman in Dhangethi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
Mahmood Aboobakr, 57, was discovered tied up and dumped in an abandoned well in Dhangethi last Thursday, following an island-wide search hours after he went missing.
On Saturday, police reported the arrest of a male migrant worker in connection with Mahmood’s murder. According to local reports, the suspect is a Bangladeshi citizen called Saalim.
A police media officer confirmed that he was remanded in custody by the Dhangethi Magistrate Court for 15 days on Saturday night.
An island resident told local media on Saturday morning that police were examining the home of an elderly resident in connection with the murder. According to accounts, the elderly resident lives alone in the home with a foreign caregiver.
Police searched the property, which is around 100 meters from where Mahmood’s body was discovered, and arrested the migrant worker after getting multiple reports of a strange noise emanating from the house on the night the victim went missing.
Mahmood was last seen leaving his house at 11:00 p.m. last Wednesday. He was reported missing at 10:00 a.m. the next day, prompting island residents to join together to find him. At around 3:15 p.m., his corpse was discovered tied and put inside a sack in a water well at an abandoned property.
