HPA’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) has warned that Male’ City was in the middle of a major COVID-19 epidemic, which saw an increase in positive sample rate and flu positivity rate.
According to TAG member Dr. Nazla Mustafa, the sample positivity rate in Male’ City began at 3% and increased to 6% by the second week. By the third week, the figure was between 5% to 7%. From 21 to 27 April, however, the positive rate grew to 10%.
Dr. Nazla Mustafa said the authorities are trying to keep the rate below 5%.
The flu positivity rate is then used to assess the community spread. According to the statistics, the average was 5% in the second and third weeks of April, but it increased to 14% from April 21 to 27.
Dr. Nazla stated that Male’ City is experiencing a major COVID-19 outbreak, as the positivity rate has increased in the last week compared to the previous two weeks.
She also cautioned of a potential new variant if the positivity rate for COVID-19 continued to rise.
