The Elections Commission (EC) has officially registered The Democrats as a political party, reflecting a new development in the political landscape. EC Vice Chair and spokesperson Ismail Habeeb took to Twitter to announce that the commissioners unanimously voted in favor of registering the party, which emerged as a breakaway faction from the ruling MDP, led by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
The Democrats recently held a founding rally where they finalized their charter, logo, and color, marking an important step in establishing their identity as a distinct political entity. They have already garnered the support of thirteen Members of Parliament, including notable figures like Hassan Latheef, Eva Abdulla, and Ali Azim, among others, showcasing the growing influence and appeal of the party.
In a further demonstration of their commitment to their cause, both Nasheed and Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Rasheed are set to formally join The Democrats during an upcoming party rally. This move will increase the party’s parliamentary representation to fifteen MPs, underlining their ambition and vision for the future.
