The Ministry of Tourism has announced a decline in the number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives during May 2023, as compared to the corresponding period in 2022. According to data provided by the tourism ministry, a total of 94,604 tourists visited the Maldives from May 1 to May 24, indicating a 6% decrease in comparison to the 100,230 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2022. In contrast, during the pre-pandemic era in 2019, a total of 81,889 tourists arrived during this timeframe.
Furthermore, the statistics highlight that the overall tourist arrivals for this year have reached 782,889, representing a 15.6% increase in comparison to the 677,034 arrivals recorded during the corresponding period last year.
The data also points out that the decline observed in May can be attributed to the reduced number of airline flights originating from India, which is the second-largest source market for tourists visiting the Maldives. To date, the country has welcomed 89,619 tourists from India this year.
