A 60-year-old Namibian tourist who was apprehended with bullets on July 10 at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been released and will face deportation, according to authorities.
On July 10, the Maldives Police Service launched an investigation after a 60-year-old tourist was detained by the Aviation Security Command at VIA for possessing bullets. Following that, the Criminal Court ordered that the tourist be held in detention for three days.
According to a police media spokesman, after the remand date expired on July 14, police released him and turned him over to the Immigration Department for deportation.
Importing and using firearms without a permit is illegal in the Maldives; however, authorities did not reveal the sort of bullets discovered on the Namibian or how many he had in his hands. Furthermore, the authorities have not explained why the 60-year-old was not charged, nor have they provided any other information about the case.
