Taxis and other modes of transportation in the Maldives have been advised by the transport ministry to refuse service to unvaccinated passengers.
As a step to encourage people to get vaccinated, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced that beginning September 1, stricter limitations would be imposed on people who have not received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Some of the restrictions announced include preventing unvaccinated people from entering restaurants, cafes, and hotels, as well as gyms, hairdressers, and cinemas.
The transport ministry issued a statement to transportation businesses urging them to obey the new HPA rules to not allow unvaccinated people to travel by land, sea, or air, including taxis and flights, which will be published next Wednesday.
According to the most recent HPA statistics, 381,902 people in Maldives received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with a total of 301,189 people receiving both doses. More than 84% of the eligible population over the age of 18 had been vaccinated against the virus.
