Maldives Employment Tribunal has ordered the payment of compensation and the reinstatement of nine Tourism Ministry employees due to unlawful termination.
The Maldives Transport Authority, which is part of the Transport Ministry, dismissed 11 workers in January 2020. According to the Permanent Secretary of Transport Ministry Abdulla Fayaz, the staff, both senior and junior, were dismissed due to poor performance and attendance.
The Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) represented nine of the eleven individuals, while two filed their cases on their own. In the PILC case, the employment tribunal recommended that all nine workers be reinstated and paid their salaries and allowances.
To prevent unjust enrichment, two of the nine workers’ salaries and allowances were to be compensated after deducting the compensation they received from working elsewhere during the time of termination.
However, the Transport Authority told at the time that the terminations were carried out in accordance with protocol.
