The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the issuance of driving licences and vehicle registration will resume this Sunday, after being halted owing to COVID-19 movement restrictions in the Greater Malé Area.
The transport ministry announced on Twitter that the driving licences, vehicle registration, and several maritime services will be available beginning June 20.
License issuance had earlier been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure due to the increasing COVID-19 cases. Following the decision, the Transport Authority faced widespread public criticism, including a protest within the office.
The authority was chastised for the delays in the supply of its services, such as the multiple month-long delay in receiving the licence card after completing the prerequisites, as well as the inability to reach the authority by phone.
Following the criticism, the authority decided to start issuing licences and registrations through a computerized station where clients can self-collect licences and registrations.
