The Criminal Court has scheduled the trial of Sha Alom Mia (Salim), a 29-year-old Bangladeshi national, for tomorrow in connection with the murder of a local businessman in Dhangethi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
Mahmood Aboobakr, 57, was discovered tied up and dumped in an abandoned well in Dhangethi on October 14, following an island-wide search hours after he was reported missing.
According to the Maldives Police Service, Salim, who was apprehended two days after Mahmood’s body was discovered, has already confessed to the murder.
On December 15, he was charged by the Prosecutor General’s Office with murder with intent and mistreatment of a corpse.
The Criminal Court has set Salim’s trial for tomorrow morning on the two allegations against him.
The police indicated that the murder was motivated by money and that Mahmood was carrying 20 MVR 500 notes at the time of his death, totaling MVR 10,000.
