The Maldives Police Service has announced the arrest of two foreigners who were selling US dollars on a large scale on the black market.
According to officials, the two detainees are both Bangladeshi nationals named Robiulla, 29, and Mohamed Firdaus, 31.
During a remand hearing in the Criminal Court, Robi’ulla was placed in police custody for 10 days and Firdaus was remanded in police custody for 15 days.
According to the police, when Firdaus was caught, he was holding a substantial sum of cash, a logbook referring to the selling of foreign currency, and bank and ATM slips. They further stated that documents from his personal bank account suggest that substantial transactions had occurred.
The police further stated that Robi’ulla is also involved in the sale of dollars on a large scale in the black market, emphasising that the two individuals are suspected of operating under a large network in selling foreign currency on the black market.
