Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, the President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, has appointed India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Nagaraj Naidu Kumar as Chef de Cabinet and Thilmeeza Hussain as the PGA’s Special Envoy.
According to Indian media, Ambassador Naidu will be the first Indian diplomat to be appointed to such a position, and his appointment demonstrates India’s growing prominence in the world.
Thilmeeza Hussain is the Maldives’ permanent representative to the United Nations as well as its ambassador to the United States and Canada.
The Maldives won the election for President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly with 143 votes cast at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Minister Shahid as the Maldives’ candidate for the Asia-Pacific Group’s turn, for the session beginning on September 14, 2021. This is the first time the Maldives has presented a candidate for the General Assembly Presidency.
