Dr. Ahmed Zahir, Minister of Islamic Affairs, has opened an Islamic center at Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll.
The Ungoofaaru Islamic Center was built using MVR 27 million from the state budget. Masjid Al-Dhuktoor Afrasheem Ali was named after Islamic scholar and lawmaker Dr. Afrasheem Ali, who was murdered in 2012.
The Islamic center has four classrooms, a library, a pantry, an administrative office, and a hall. The two-story structure also has a 5,000-square-foot worshipping room that can seat 900 attendees. According to the Islamic ministry, the center also contains a female ablution and prayer room.
In March 2017, the former administration hired SJ Construction Private Limited to build the Islamic center. The center’s construction was finished in January 2020 by the company.
