Urbanco has warned tenants of Hiyaa flats that they may lose their housing units if they violate safety rules. This follows an investigation into a fire incident in an apartment within a Hiyaa tower caused by a discarded cigarette. Urbanco stated in a press release that the incident was due to negligence and that the company has a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior.
The company emphasized that tenants were given social housing units after signing agreements that dictate safety rules, including a ban on smoking, lighting fires, and other actions that might endanger residents or damage the building. Tenants are not allowed to smoke or vape or discard cigarettes on balconies. Those who violate the safety rules may face fines ranging from MVR 1,000 to 100,000 or lose their housing unit.
Urbanco further stated that it prioritizes the safety of all residents in such incidents. The Hiyaa flats area is home to 25,000 residents, making it the largest residential community in Hulhumale’. This is the second fire incident that occurred in the same month due to a discarded cigarette filter.
