The United States Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) has confirmed that the United States is ready to assist in the investigation into the assassination attempt on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
SCA condemned last night’s attack on Speaker Nasheed, in a statement, saying they were saddened and worried by the attack.
Early this morning, the American Ambassador to the Maldives, Alaina B. Teplitz, wished Speaker Nasheed a speedy recovery and condemned the blast.
A timed blast from a motorcycle occurred outside Speaker Nasheed’s residence in the Maldivian capital’s Galolhu district at 08:30 PM on Thursday, injuring the former president and five others.
Moreover, he was rushed to ADK Hospital, which confirmed he was brought in with multiple injuries but his vitals are now stable.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from opposition and several politicians alike, and foreign diplomats. Many dubbed it as an attempt on Nasheed’s life and an act of terror.
