Vashugiri Pvt Ltd was fined over MVR 500,000 by the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to comply with the environmental impact assessment.
According to an EPA statement, the company was penalized for breaking regulations under the environmental impact assessment report (EIAR) for the development of Cocogiri Island Resort on Vashugiri, Vaavu Atoll.
The company was fined MVR 593,750 under the Environmental Liability Regulation in order to recover compensation for environmental damages, the EPA said.
Vashugiri Pvt Ltd was given a month to pay the penalty, although the EPA did not specify the breaches in the statement.
In late December, the EPA imposed a similar penalty on Paradise Resort Development & Management Pvt Ltd, the firm that established a resort in Maafushivaru.
