Visit Maldives inaugurated “Thasveeru: Maldives Through Art” on Thursday, an international art competition to promote the Maldives’ tourism industry by displaying the country’s natural beauty through art created by foreign and local artists.
In conjunction with the Maldivian Artist Community (MAC), the competition invites local and international artists to paint and interpret the Maldives under the topic “Celebration of Nature: Beautiful Ecosystems”. The topic was chosen to demonstrate that the Maldives has a varied range of natural environments and offers more than just award-winning beaches, according to Visit Maldives.
Paintings, digital art, and mixed media are acceptable mediums for submitted artworks in this competition. All contributions must be made through the Visit Maldives’ specially designed microsite for the art competition. The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2021, at 12 p.m.
An independent judging panel will select the 12 best artworks (6 foreign and 6 local) from all submissions based on creativity, concept, originality, completion, and fluency in the chosen media. The 12 artworks will be displayed on the official Instagram feed of Visit Maldives. The final winners are chosen based on 50% of the total number of likes on Instagram and 50% of the overall score awarded by the judging panel for the artwork. The competition will pick four winners (2 international and 2 local).
The first and second place winners in both the international and local categories will each receive a cash reward of $3000 (MVR 46,350) and $2000 (MVR 30,900), respectively. The chosen artworks will be utilized in future Visit Maldives promotional initiatives.
The competition is a one-of-a-kind project presented for the first time as part of Visit Maldives’ social media strategy to promote the Maldives as a tourist destination. It also supports the local artist community and uses a variety of creative techniques to emphasize the country’s awe-inspiring beauty and natural ecosystems.
